During the night of 09/10 August 2012 engineering work was taking place on the line that runs between Nuneaton and Birmingham. The work activities were coming to a close when, at about 04:20 hrs, an on-track machine (a stone blower) collided with a stationary on-track machine (a ballast regulator) within the work site, on the down Arley line. The leading bogie of the stone blower derailed and damage was caused to both machines.
The RAIB’s investigation will identify the sequence of events that led to the collision. It will also address the system of work, the nature of communications between those involved in the control and driving of the machines, and the factors that may have influenced the actions of those involved. The RAIB’s investigation is independent of any investigations by the safety authority (the Office of Rail Regulation) or the British Transport Police (BTP).
The RAIB will publish a report, including any recommendations to improve safety, at the conclusion of its investigation. This report will be available on the RAIB website.
