We recently saw another prime example of unintended consequences: two satellites came together in orbit. To be fair, abandoning satellites in orbit is a standard practice that has been in place since we first started putting hardware in space. Up until recently the odds of two full size satellites coming together were considered so remote that most organizations couldn’t justify the expense, or risk, of de-orbiting their satellites.
Now, of course, the expense and risk are exactly the same as before the collision, but our perception and motivation to justify taking certain actions has changed quite a bit.

David,
So “out of sight out of mind” is the rule, until…. no longer out of sight. We always knew this could happen but.. or in some cases I never thought it out fully until after the fact. Thanks for the recent example in space.
