Technically Speaking – Dashboard Widgets

Posted: October 13th, 2016 in Software, Technical Support, Technically Speaking, Uncategorized

What’s a widget you ask?? If you would have asked me this question when I was a child, I would have told you that Widget was the name of my family pet cat. But today, the term widget means something else to me in regards to software. A widget is a small application within a webpage that provides useful information. You may be familiar with widgets that you use on your iPhone or Smartphone.

Well in TapRooT® VI, widgets exist to provide valuable trending data on your incidents, investigations, audits, root causes and corrective actions. Currently, if you were to visit the DASHBOARD menu, you would find just 4 basic widgets. But I am excited to announce that in our near future release we have COMPLETELY enhanced this dashboard with a variety of widgets and custom options to help meaningfully display your data.

Want to know which Basic Cause Categories, Near Root Causes or Root Causes are your biggest offenders? Want to know which locations or classifications have the most issues? Want to know how many complete, incomplete or past due Corrective Action tasks you have? These dashboard widgets will let you know. There are almost 25 widgets that can be viewed in over 70 combination display types to help you focus on exactly what sort of information you want to see. Take a look.

You can choose from a variety of display chart types including Table Chart, Pie Chart, Horizontal or Vertical Bar Charts, Line Charts AND Pareto Charts.

You can filter by date range, location and classification to really drill down to that level of detail that you may want to understand.

Want to print a copy of your charts? You can export them to PDF and save or print to share with others.

Customize your dashboard to display your most frequently displayed widgets every time you visit the dashboard.

Slice it, dice it, anyway you want to see it. These little widgets pack a lot of big power and information. You can look forward to seeing these new features VERY soon!

Technically Speaking – The Root Cause Tree®

Posted: July 15th, 2016 in Software, Technical Support, Technically Speaking

The Root Cause Tree® is undeniably an essential tool used in the TapRooT® process.

With the new TapRooT® VI software, we’ve preserved our roots, with an eye on the future in regards to the Root Cause Tree® and Root Cause Tree® Dictionary.

What does this mean exactly? It means you have options! Let me show you.

rct toggle pic

When you open a Root Cause Tree® in the new software, you will find a “toggle” button in the upper right hand corner that presents you with two options: Question View and Tree View.

The Tree View is the “visual” Root Cause Tree® that you’re probably used to.

rct tree view1

And now we also offer the Question View which presents ALL of the same Root Cause Tree® and Root Cause Tree® Dictionary information as the Tree View but in a new and easy to use format.

rct question view

You will see a drop down list of questions that are expandable at the Basic Cause Category, Near Root Cause and Root Cause level. This sleek design allows you to view as much or as little information at a time while you work through the Basic Cause Categories.

Both views offer a new enhancement to the tree that allows you to select YES or NO to the individual Root Cause Tree® Dictionary questions contained within each individual Basic Cause Category, Near Root Cause and Root Cause. Did you ever go back to a Root Cause Tree® and not be able to recall WHY you chose a specific Root Cause? This new feature will make it much easier to track the decisions that were made while analyzing your Causal Factors.

In Question View, these questions are found by clicking on the expandable Basic Cause Category, Near Root Cause or Root Cause sections. In the Tree View, they are accessed by clicking the question mark icon on the hover menu that appears when you place your mouse over each section.

Another new feature to the tree are Instruction Banners. You will find these yellow Instruction Banners anywhere there is work direction or instruction that should be considered BEFORE proceeding to the YES/NO questions. By prominently displaying these instructions, it can help reduce the amount of time spent on a given Basic Cause, Near Root Cause or Root Cause by clearly providing important information beforehand.

Still need some help? You will also find additional guidance and notes (when applicable) in a pop up display that is accessed by clicking on a light bulb icon.

And of course the basic functions are still found on the tree including Analysis Comments where you can enter and save any relevant data for reference at a later time.

Technically Speaking – Do You Want to be SMARTER???

Posted: June 2nd, 2016 in Software, Technical Support, Technically Speaking

Sure, we all want to be smarter but let’s talk about being SMARTER in TapRooT® terms.

When using the TapRooT® process, you will first Plan, Investigate and Analyze an incident to identify Causal Factors and their Root Cause(s). THEN, you will create Corrective Actions to help keep them from happening again in the future (Fix). To prevent future occurrences, you will want your Corrective Actions to be SMARTER.

SMARTER is an acronym that stands for:

S – Specific
M – Measurable
A – Accountable
R – Reasonable
T – Timely
E – Effective
R – Reviewed

Each letter and an associated series of questions or statements should be thoroughly considered when creating your Corrective Actions. This will help provide guidance to ensure the BEST possible fix is developed and implemented.

What if I told you that the new TapRooT® VI software has a wizard that can help make you SMARTER???

gandalf

I don’t mean this type of wizard…I mean “wizard” like a “setup assistant” that will guide you through a series of steps to help you create SMARTER Corrective Actions.  TapRooT® VI provides a wizard that leads you step-by-step through each letter of the SMARTER acronym to help you consider all of the important aspects that go into creating the most effective Corrective Actions.

Take a look.

CA wizard

Once you have completed each step in the SMARTER wizard, your Implementation, Verification and Validation Plans with the associated Due Dates and Persons Responsible will be automatically added as Tasks to your Corrective Action. You can easily track what has been completed, not completed or is past due.

But maybe you don’t want to create a SMARTER Corrective Action.  I’m not saying you want to create a dumb Corrective Action, but perhaps just a simpler fix that does not require multiple tasks. TapRooT® VI gives you the ability to document a SIMPLE version of a Corrective Action. A toggle button is featured that allows you to choose between creating a SMARTER or SIMPLE Corrective Action. Whatever fits your needs!

Technically Speaking – A Sneak Peek at TapRooT® VI (A Closer Look at SnapCharT®)

Posted: March 17th, 2016 in Software, Software Updates, Technical Support, Technically Speaking

We are nearing the initial release for TapRooT® VI and excited to announce that the first public 2 Day Course with the new software will be taught by software guru Dan Verlinde in Portland, Oregon on April 18th. Join us if you can! If you can’t make it though, don’t worry. I have more to share with you now.

The past couple of Sneak Peek blog articles have highlighted many of the exciting new enhancements found throughout TapRooT® VI but let’s take an even CLOSER look at one of the most used features of the software:  SnapCharT®.

Creating a SnapCharT® is a critical step within the TapRooT® process and TapRooT® VI is aimed at providing a LOT of enhancements to make this easier to use and also more visually appealing. Take a look:

snapchart example

CLICK THE ABOVE IMAGE TO VIEW A LARGER COPY IN A NEW WINDOW

Some things you’ve probably noticed right away:

On the left hand side of the SnapCharT® menu, there are new TABS that allow you to do more within the SnapCharT®.

  • The Shapes Tab contains your standard SnapCharT® Shapes and allows you to add Conditions, Events, Incidents, Page Breaks and Text to your chart.
  • The Optional Techniques Tab allows you to create an Equifactor®, Change Analysis, Safeguards Analysis and/or CHAP DIRECTLY from your SnapCharT®. You no longer have to create your Optional Techniques independently of the SnapCharT®. While using any Optional Technique, you can identify and create new Conditions or Events. Then, use the next tab (Drop Zone) to immediately add them to your chart.
  • As mentioned above, the Drop Zone Tab is an area where shapes created using the Optional Techniques will appear. From here you can choose whether or not to add them to your SnapCharT®.
  • The Versions Tab will display a list of SnapCharT® COPIES. At any point in the process you can make a COPY of a SnapCharT® to keep for your reference later on. You can make as many copies as you want!

Some things you may NOT have noticed that have also been incorporated into the newly designed SnapCharT®:

  • Auto save. No more worrying about having to click the save button! SnapCharT® will save your changes every 1 minute OR at any time IF exiting the SnapCharT®.
  • Typing in your Condition, Events or Incident Shapes is easier than ever. Simply add the shape of your choice to the SnapCharT® and start typing. You don’t have to add your shape, click in the text field at the top of SnapCharT® and enter your text here anymore.
  • Take pictures of the chart (or part of the chart) using the SnapCap Image Capture feature and they are saved directly to a SnapCap folder that can be found in your Attachments section.
  • With the simple click of a button, you can change an Event to a Condition or vice versa. No more adding, moving or deleting shapes just because you want to change it. Keep your text in place and simply click the “Change” button.
  • EVERY USER can assign their own custom colors, and font types, sizes, bold/italics/underline settings for EACH SnapCharT® shape. And once you indicate these preferences, they will carry over to every SnapCharT® you do.

STAY TUNED for more Sneak Peeks and closer looks at the exciting new features and enhancements found in TapRooT® VI!

Technically Speaking – A Sneak Peek at TapRooT® VI (Q and A Edition)

Posted: February 11th, 2016 in Software, Software Updates, Technical Support, Technically Speaking

I recently attended a 5 Day Course (it was awesome!) so I had a chance to get feedback directly from people in the field using the TapRooT® Version 5 Software. I received lots of great questions and comments so I thought I would share some of the questions (and answers) with you. You may notice a theme here…

Q: On the SnapCharT® in Version 5, if I decide I need to change an Event to a Condition or a Condition to an Event, can I do this without having to add a new shape and delete the old one?

A: No. BUT, you can in TapRooT® VI!
With the simple click of a button, you can change an Event to a Condition or vice versa. No more adding, moving or deleting shapes just because you want to change it. Keep your text in place and simply click the “Change” button.

Q: Can I apply default colors, and fonts, sizes, etc. to my Events, Conditions and Incidents in Version 5?

A: No. BUT, you can in TapRooT® VI!
EVERY USER can assign their own custom colors, and font types, sizes, bold/italics/underline settings for EACH SnapCharT® shape. And once you indicate these preferences, they will carry over to every SnapCharT® you do.

Q: When I’m using any of the Optional Techniques in Version 5 (like Change Analysis, CHAP, Equifactor® or Safeguards Analysis) and I identify a Condition or Event that needs to be added to my SnapCharT®, can I do this without having to leave the Optional Technique, open my SnapCharT® and manually add the shape and text?

A: No. BUT, you can in TapRooT® VI!
The new and improved Optional Techniques allow you to immediately take your information and click a button that adds your Condition or Event to the SnapCharT®. It is added to a “Drop Zone” area and when you return to the SnapCharT®, your new Condition or Event is waiting there for you to drag and drop it onto the chart.

Q: When I’m using the Root Cause Tree® and I want to remember specifically which questions I answered “Yes” to, can I indicate this in the Version 5 Software or do I manually have to add a comment?

A: No. BUT, you can in TapRooT® VI!
How many times have you gone back to an Investigation and wondered, “Why exactly did I decide to choose this Root Cause?” Wonder no more! TapRooT® VI still has the capability of saving Root Cause Tree® Analysis Comments, but it also allows you to select “Yes” or “No” to any question from the Root Cause Tree® Dictionary with the click of a button.
