Three Words that Stifle Stimulation!

And last but not least, don’t forget to register for the Summit and meet him in person!Fewer things are more enjoyable than knowing you are respected and appreciated so avoid the words that can stifle effective stimulation during effective communication. These words are featured in the book, “Lead Out Loud: Keys to Unlock Your Professional Excellence!” are called, Fire Terms©: words or phrases that can increase defensiveness.

1. But

“But” cancels out everything that was said before it and tells that person that the speaker only cares about what came after it. For example, if you said to someone, “I hear your point, but,” What you are really saying is, “I did not hear your point. In fact I probably didn’t listen to all of it. What I think is important is my own idea.” Imagine if someone you cared about told you, “I love you, but…”

2. Never

“Never” makes an unconditional and unqualified statement. Few things are so definite that they will never happen. It will only take one instance to prove a “never” statement wrong. It makes it seem like you exaggerate and it reduces your credibility.

3. Basically

“Basically” is a filler word that is often substituted for, “yes”. If it is, “yes”, just say “yes”. Using basically can make you seem indecisive or as if there is additional information being left out.

Whether in the living room or the board room, avoid these and other Fire Terms to amplify the stimulation of communication!

4 Steps to Playing like a Champion in 2018

Ever wonder what your life would feel like if you had the knowledge to live life at the top of your game? Champions know how to compete, but they are not born that way. Every champion has to first learn how to qualify for the game before they even get a chance to compete for the win.

So, how do you qualify to play?

First

Begin today by forming a mental picture of where you want to be. If you can form a strong mental picture and rehearse it, your brain will find a way to get you there. Write it down.  Read it daily.

Second

Expect setbacks and move past them. Let them be lessons learned that propel you forward not anchors that weigh you down. A champion is an ordinary individual who persists through obstacles. Are expectations causing you stress? Don’t put the high expectations of others in a negative light.  Expectations are really support… a belief that you can accomplish a goal.

Third

Stay focused on your mental picture of success and support yourself with positive affirmations. If you are not telling yourself that you are capable of success every single day, there is no way you are going to experience it. If you are waiting for someone else to believe in you, they are probably waiting for you to believe in yourself. Stay positive.

Fourth

Strive for improvement. You will experience wins practicing these steps but regardless of your achievements, operate under the goal of self-improvement. So, practice these steps to qualify to play, and then join us at the 2018 Global TapRooT® Summit to continue improving! Stop making New Year’s Resolutions promising to focus more on yourself. Instead, channel that energy towards supporting others.

Be honest, how do you feel when you see others accomplishing their dreams and goals? Are you disappointed, jealous, angered, or motivated?

A “hater” is a term used to describe someone who says negative comments about others who are doing well. Don’t be a hater! Be a congratulator! Be the type of person who is happy and supportive of the success of others.

When you are unable to be happy for others, it reflects your own insecurity. When others hate on you, they do not really hate you. The truth is, their negative feeling has nothing to do with your accomplishment. The negativity that pessimistic people project is more about their awareness of their lack of effort.

Do the following to show support to others:

  1. Point out significant accomplishes with specific results.
  2. Tell others how their efforts and contributions have positive impacts.
  3. Share the success of others by saying or sending complimentary messages.

A successful, determined, focused, and disciplined person is happy for another who makes the commitment to greatness, because excellence recognizes excellence. In this New Year, make a commitment to be supportive for others and encourage them to be successful.

My 20+ Year Relationship with 5-Why’s

I first heard of 5-Why’s over 20 years ago when I got my first job in Quality. I had no experience of any kind, I got the job because I worked with the Quality Manager’s wife in another department and she told him I was a good guy. True story…but that’s how things worked back then!

When I was first exposed to the 5-Why concept, it did not really make any sense to me; I could not understand how it actually could work, as it seemed like the only thing it revealed was the obvious. So, if it is obvious, why do I need it? That is a pretty good question from someone who did not know much at the time.

I dived into Quality and got all the certifications, went to all the classes and conferences, and helped my company build an industry leading program from the ground up. A recurring concept in the study and materials I was exposed to was 5-Why. I learned the “correct” way to do it. Now I understood it, but I still never thought it was a good way to find root causes.

I transferred to another division of the company to run their safety program. I did not know how to run a safety program – I did know all the rules, as I had been auditing them for years, but I really did not know how to run the program. But I did know quality, and those concepts helped me instill an improvement mindset in the leaders which we successfully applied to safety.

The first thing I did when I took the job was to look at the safety policies and procedures, and there it was; when you have an incident, “ask Why 5 times” to get your root cause! That was the extent of the guidance. So whatever random thought was your fifth Why would be the root cause on the report! The people using it had absolutely no idea how the concept worked or how to do it. And my review of old reports validated this. Since then I have realized this is a common theme with 5-Why’s; there is a very wide variation in the way it is used. I don’t believe it works particularly well even when used correctly, but it usually isn’t in my experience.

Since retiring from my career and coming to work with TapRooT®, I’ve had literally hundreds of conversations with colleagues, clients, and potential clients about 5-Why’s. I used to be somewhat soft when criticizing 5-Why’s and just try to help people understand why TapRooT® gets better results. Recently, I’ve started to take a more militant approach. Why? Because most of the people I talk to already know that 5-Why’s does not work well, but they still use it anyway (easier/cheaper/quicker)!

So it is time to take the gloves off; let’s not dance around this any longer. To quote Mark Paradies:
“5-Why’s is Root Cause Malpractice!”

To those that are still dug in and take offense, I do apologize! I can only share my experience.

Kick Them Out of Your Canoe – Leadership

Leadership is a lot like paddling in a canoe. Let’s say you and two other people are in a canoe. The goal is to cross a river. Let’s say you are in the rear and the other two are seated in front of you. Even if you are the only one paddling, you can propel everyone in the canoe on your own. If all three of you paddle, together in rhythm, all three of you can propel faster. If everyone paddles together, you can also exert less energy and still go faster, farther, with less work from each person individually. This is the concept of teamwork. But how is this related to leadership?

Let’s say, you are paddling hard in the canoe and the other two are not paddling but even worse, they are sticking the legs and hands out of the canoe and into the river. Their placing their limbs in the water is now causing drag. All three bodies have the potential to go faster. If two are not paddling or worse, causing resistance, everyone slows down.

You ask each person to paddle. One tells you they are tired. The other says they will paddle later. You then ask them to at least pull their hands and feet out of the water and place them back inside of the canoe to prevent unnecessary resistance. They both tell you it’s hot and they prefer to keep themselves cool by sticking their hands and feet in the water. They are not focused on the advancement of the team. They are selfish focusing only on what is easier for them personally.

You now have a conundrum. Keep both in the canoe maintaining the potential for more efficiency. Or do you make the tough leadership decision, and, KICK THEM OUT OF THE CANOE! You can move faster, yes, even moving by yourself, than you can with those you are carrying who are not putting forth their effort.

Give others the opportunity to paddle for the team. Be clear about the goal. If others step up, they deserve to stay dry. If they fail to do their part, make the tough decision and do what is best long term, and kick them out of your canoe!
