Oxygen is considered a medication and can be harmful or deadly depending upon an individuals medical problem(s). For example, a subset of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are ‘oxygen sensitive’ and giving too much O2 can increase Co2 in the blood stream further blunting their respiratory drive.
The important thing to remember is that oxygen is not a benign substance and like any type of medical therapy must be given in a proper manner.
