British Rail Incident: Man vs. Machine

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has posted an initial accident summary, describing a rail worker who was struck by a slow-moving passenger train near Dalston Kingston station in the UK.  Few details are listed, but the RAIB is investigating the incident.  The summary can be found here.

At the 2008 TapRooT® Summit held in Las Vegas, the RAIB Chief Inspector, Carolyn Griffiths, was one of the keynote speakers.  She mentioned that this type of accident (train vs. railway worker), while not common, is a recurring source of incidents.  Maintenance is often performed on active rail lines, sometimes only feet from moving trains.  Details have not been released concerning this particular accident.
