Experience Wellington

Wellington is called the world’s “coolest little capital” by Lonely Planet. You’ll see it’s a hub for arts and music, and home to countless cafes, restaurants, and bars. In June 2018, Wellington was named New Zealand’s most creative city as measured by those employed in creative jobs. If you ask the locals, they’ll say, “We’ve got the best coffee and the best beer.” Which may be why Deutsche Bank again named Wellington “the most livable city in New Zealand.”

We’ve put together some sights, sounds, and tastes for you to explore in Wellington, and be sure to check out more to explore on our TapRooT® Wellington Pinterest board.

To see creative beauty at its best, don’t miss the Ranginui stained-glass door designed by Robert Jahnke in the Marae (a meeting place) at Wellington’s Te Papa, New Zealand’s waterfront museum. See Mana Whenua, to discover the wealth of history and contemporary artworks belonging to the Maori people.

Cuba Street is full of a quirky, bohemian vibe, alive with tastings awaiting trial in the cafes, secondhand boutiques, New Zealand buskers playing soul, and creativity everywhere you look. Stroll to Cuba Mall, a car-free zone between Ghuznee and Dixon streets, to look at Bucket Fountain. Cuba Street became a registered Historic Area under the Historic Places Act in 1995.

Set amid flowering eucalyptus trees, the towering, red sandstone columns of the Australian War Memorial creates a stirring, striking landscape inside Wellington’s Pukeahu Park.

The views in Wellington are spectacular, among the most is Mount Victoria in the heart of the city. Hike to the 643-foot summit for incredible sunset-watching.

Also, filed under impressive views, find Wright’s Hill Fortress and Recreation Reserve.

A historical landmark, Te Ahumairangi Hill Lookout, provides another remarkable vista overlooking the harbor.

Surrounded by water, Wellington offers countless opportunities for water play and adventure:

Taste Wellington

At Fidel’s Café, what keeps the locals coming back is the Havana coffee from a roaster around the corner and great counter food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Savor a burger or Sunday brunch at Taste, in northern Wellington’s small village of Khandallah.

Try Cuban-themed Havana Bar, set up in two cottages, for tunes and atmosphere to go along with the good fare and spirits.
