How long should a root cause analysis take?

(Picture above from NewsNow web page)

An article on NewsNow (New Zealand) is titled:

“One week after Wellington train derailment, KiwiRail no closer to knowing cause”

The Chief Operating Officer of KiwiRail said,

“It is important that the investigation work is completed
thoroughly and accurately to ensure that
the root cause is correctly identified.”

How long should aroot cause analysis take? A week? A month? Less than a year?
