Enter Columbus and immediately you feel the spark of an energy vibe. Does it come from the city’s art and cultural influences? Or from the diversity and spirit of its incredible people? From being home to Ohio State University? It’s one of those questions that gets more interesting when you mull it over some of the terrific Midwestern food you’ll savor while you’re in Columbus.
A city adventure tour is a great way to catch up with some of Columbus’ history and highlights, with a little time built in for photo opps and some great inside information on where to dine. Along the way, you’ll learn about the Ohio Statehouse, German Village, Thurber House, Columbus Museum of Art, the Short North Arts District, Franklinton, the King Lincoln District, Scioto Mile, Kelton House, and the National Veterans Memorial and Museum. The Columbus City Adventure tour is just over two hours and well worth every second.
In the Discovery District—at 480 E. Town Street—you’ll discover the Topiary Park of Columbus. An ideal place to enjoy nature and art at the same time, it’s literally a landscape of the painting by George Seurat, “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.” The park is said to be the only one in the world based entirely on a painting. If you’re in Columbus, this is a must-go.
Directly across from the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum (for comic and cartoon buffs) is the Wexner Center for the Arts. “Wex,” as the locals know it, is a great contemporary art museum on the Ohio State University’s campus.
If you like eating plant-based, it doesn’t get better than Comune (see image above). Chef Ben Kanavel prepares artful, delicious fare for vegetarians, vegans, and omnivores. Organic wines are popular here.
As you’re sightseeing in the German Village, you’re going to want to drop in on at least one or two of the eateries in that locale. Here are a few to choose from:
Skillet makes your selections to order. Locals agree that Skillet gets farm-to-table just right. Visit this eatery in the neighborhood of the German Village.
French fare, a far-reaching wine selection, and the ambience of stained glass and sky-high ceilings—all give The Refectory Restaurant & Bistro the upscale nod that it deserves. Reservations are recommended at this eatery located in a former church.
