Planning Improvement in 2020

Vision for 2020

What is Your Vision for 2020?

We are well into the first quarter of 2020. Are you:

  • Well along the path to implementing the improvements you need to make to achieve success in 2020?
  • Already behind schedule for making improvements happen?
  • Still trying to decide what you will improve and how?
  • Lost in a world that is quickly changing and you don’t know what to do!

Developing an improvement plan, scheduling the improvements, and implementing your plan can be a challenge.

Making a Plan for 2020 – Evaluate

Improvement Plan Gears

Before you can plan your improvements, you need goals. And improvement goals should be based on an accurate picture of where you are and where you want to go (an evaluation).

Therefore, the first question you might ask yourself is, do I have a good set of performance measures to know where I am? If you need to develop better performance measures, that might be your first goal!

Trending Book

Do we have any ideas to help you develop performance measures? YES! We wrote about developing performance measures in the book, Performance Measures and Trending for Safety, Quality, and Business Management. Would you like to learn more? Then order your copy at this link:

You can use the performance measures and the trending tools described in the book to help you set your goals.

Another helpful resource for developing your plan and goals is a good root cause analysis of previous issues/incidents. The root cause analysis applied reactively to incidents should have helped you develop effective corrective actions. This should be driving effective improvements. But that data from the root cause analysis should help you decide what areas need even more attention. Thus, good root cause analysis not only provides reactive ideas for corrective actions, but it also provides your vision of the areas needing improvement the most.

Finally, benchmarking your performance against others inside and outside your industry can help you evaluate where you are compared to others and where you might want to go (your goals).

Where can you benchmark your company’s performance against companies inside and outside your industry? The 2020 Global TapRooT® Summit. Hear people talk about Networking and Benchmarking at last year’s Summit in this video:

Making a Plan for 2020 – Plan

Once you have some ideas, you need to put them together into a plan. We have been helping people plan their improvement with a new tool called the Roadmap to Success. Below is a blank roadmap. Would you like help filling one out?

Here are two ideas …

  1. Call us and we will work with you one on one to develop a roadmap for your success. Our number is 865-539-2139. Or CLICK HERE to contact us.
  2. If you are already planning to attend the 2020 Global TapRooT® Summit, bring your improvement ideas with you. The last Best Practice Session of the Summit is a session to develop your Roadmap to Success. The end of the Summit is a great place to develop an improvement roadmap because of all the great improvement ideas you will have at the Summit.

Making a Plan for 2020 – Implement

Once you have a vision and a plan with action items, people responsible, and due dates, you are ready to start your implementation. Of course, implementation requires management approval and assignment of resources.

You will need to track the implementation and make sure that everyone keeps to the plan (they aren’t distracted by bright shiny objects).

Filled treasure chest.

Tracking implementation is really a project management issue. Is your company good at managing implementation of corrective actions or should improving your management of implementation be one of your goals?

Get New Ideas and the Motivation to Make Improvement Happen

We discussed the possibility of getting new improvement ideas by participating in the 2020 Global TapRooT® Summit, but we didn’t discuss something equally important – MOTIVATION.

Astronaut Jim Wetherbee, Keynote Speaker

Making improvement happen is difficult. You will need motivation to keep your improvement initiatives progressing an on track. The Global TapRooT® Summit is a great place to get motivated. The Keynote Speakers and the TapRooT® User Success Stories are great sources of motivation.

Are You Ready to Make Improvement Happen?

Are you already making your 2020 improvements happen or are you procrastinating and behind schedule? Maybe this short article will provide the motivation you need to get started.

My recommendation is to attend the 2020 Global TapRooT® Summit coming up the week of March 9-13 at the Horseshoe Bay Resort near Austin, Texas. This is a great event at a world-class resort.

If that doesn’t motivate you to get started … maybe you should just give up for 2020 and start planning for 2021!
