Experience New Orleans

You’ll want to explore NOLA’s big personality, so below we’ve included highlights of this city known for its jazz, nightlife, good times and culinary relevance, and quirky culture. Discover more to explore on our TapRooT® New Orleans Pinterest board.

Don’t miss seeing the National World War II Museum, key to understanding the place of history and freedom, and also a museum that continues to grow.

Take a walk through the Garden District for its gorgeous views.

Explore famous Bourbon Street and the  French Quarter!

Throughout the city, you’ll spot mansions, such as the ones on St. Charles Avenue—described as “The Jewel of America’s Grand Avenues”—near Tulane University. The grand homes are especially easy to check out while riding the streetcar.

Did you know? Ninety percent of NOLA burials are above ground, due to New Orleans’ high water table? On Esplanade Avenue, near the New Orleans Museum of Art, are elaborate burial vaults in St. Louis Cemetery No. 3, many in Greek Orthodox or Masonic design. The largest collection of marble tombs and statuary, and perhaps the most iconic, is in Metairie Cemetery.

Taste New Orleans

How many of these New Orleans taste treats have you tried?

Beignets: Those small deep-fried pockets of deliciousness covered in powdered sugar! Check out a variety of beignets at renowned Café du Monde.

Oysters: Often consumed raw here, with a saltine and some hot sauce. Nothing better! You can get your oysters and your Creole on at Felix’s Restaurant & Oyster Bar.

Gumbo: A thick blend of vegetables, full of seafood. Often served over rice. Gumbo is serious food here. The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation presents the Tremé Creole Gumbo Festival, drawing a wealth of artistic talent to the area and a great place to go hog-wild on gumbo sampling. Until the next festival, check out these gumbo offerings:

Po’boys: From gritty joints to hidden gems, this New Orleans sandwich—typically with roast beef, gravy, fried shrimp, oysters, and mayonnaise—is a NOLA classic. Try Domilse’s Po-Boys,
Crawfish: boiled and served spicy. Often you are expected to crack open the shells, and suck the head out (I passed on this).

Go for authentic Louisiana-inspired seafood in historic uptown at Superior Seafood & Oyster Bar. Find it at streetcar stop number 24, on the corner of St. Charles and Napoleon avenues.

Among New Orleans’ most well-known restaurants are Gautreau’s, Galatoire’s, Arnaud’s, Broussard’s, Brennan’s, Antoine’s. You may want to check one or more out.
