Experience Lake Tahoe
With 70 shoreline miles, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the crystal-clear lake and the majestic Sierra Nevadas, Lake Tahoe offers superb outdoor recreation and many photo opportunities. Savor a scenic gondola ride; squeal from a zip line; shake out the cobwebs via casinos, restaurants, and nightlife.
As far as getting here, flying into Lake Tahoe is simple. Many airlines have direct flights from major U.S. cities into the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, five minutes from downtown Reno and 40 minutes from the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe.
Coming to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada Mountains also puts you at the doorstep of four well-known national parks: Yosemite, Kings Canyon, Sequoia, and Lassen Volcanic.
Fitness tip: Some people feel out of breath while biking and hiking here due to the 6,200 feet in elevation. That translates into 20 percent less oxygen per breath than at sea level. Pace yourself and stay hydrated.
Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest: The spectacular 6.3 million acres make this the largest national forest in the lower 48 states. Enjoy year-round recreation of all types.
Lake Tahoe Nevada state parks: From Beaver Dam to Wild Horse, Lake Tahoe state parks will open your eyes to wonders of the West. Flowing streams, beaches, and waterfalls. Meadows and rolling hills. Pinyon, juniper, and ponderosa forests. Deep canyons. Ichthyosaur remains. Boating, fishing, swimming, water skiing, horseback riding, and camping. Early pioneer life, a ranch, forts, and a historic schoolhouse. A cathedral gorge. Pick your park to find your adventure.
Lake Tahoe Water Trail: Paddle to your heart’s content. Keep in mind that Lake Tahoe’s crystalline water is always cold.
Echo Lake hiking trails: Ranging from easy to moderate to difficult, these hiking trails pass Lower and Upper Echo Lakes as well as many other lakes and scenic splendors.
Did you know that Lake Tahoe is the second deepest lake in the United States?
Zephyr Cove: Just a few miles down the road from Lake Tahoe is Zephyr Cove. The cove has a marina, beach access, horseback riding, dining, and a fun, fascinating cruise on a paddlewheel boat. During the cruise, you’ll see a documentary, Underwater Treasures of Lake Tahoe, which clues you in on Lake Tahoe history, underwater life and artifacts, and geological wonders.
Lake Tahoe Scenic Drive: A 72-mile loop around Lake Tahoe in California and Nevada follows three highways: US 50, NV 28, and US 89. The panoramic drive passes through South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe City, Incline Village, King’s Beach, Stateline Lookout, and several other adventure-filled stops.
Thunderbird Lodge: Welcome to Lake Tahoe’s historic, magical Castle-in-the-Sky and the famous Thunderbird yacht. Once inside the stone mansion and grounds, you will be let in on the mystery of George Whittell, Jr. Public tours of this National Register Historic Site are available by land, by tour boat, or by kayak, Tuesdays through Saturdays from early June until mid-October. Reservations are required for all tours. For event information, reservations, and general information, call 775- 832-8752 or use the Information Request Form.
