Tech Support Thursday: The SnapCharT AutoSave Mystery
Hello everybody, welcome to another fun-filled edition of Tech Support Thursday.
This week we’re going to investigate the autosave feature of SnapCharT. How does it work? Where does it save the files?

The first thing to learn about AutoSaving in SnapCharT is this: The AutoSave Feature Does NOT Save The File To The Database!
The database which runs the TapRooT System Software keeps all of your incident information safe, but this autosave feature does not utilize it at all.
So when you go to File – Autosave… and see something like this:
This is saving a copy of the chart to the C:\Windows\Temp directory, as seen here:
For the geeky description, the .ECX file is the XML file which controls the data inside the chart. The .ECF file is the “full” chart—you could import the chart into another incident using this file. The .BAK file is the AutoSave backup. These files are deleted when you close SnapCharT.
You can, technically, rename the .BAK file to .ECF (i.e. remove “.BAK” from the file name) and you’ll have the most recent version of your chart in .ECF form to import/email/whatever.
The prompt you receive aftering closing the chart looks like this:
By clicking Yes here, and only by clicking Yes, will you save your chart to the database. At no other time will the chart be saved to the database.
One last thing: The AutoSave increment default of every 5 minutes can NOT be changed on a global scale. That is, you cannot set all of your charts to default to every 1 minute or every 20 minutes. The default of 5 minute autosaving is set when the chart is created, so there is no altering this.
