Tech Support Thursday: When Users Collide

Hello again everyone, welcome to another Tech Support Thursday.

Today I’m going to talk to the multi-user administrators and users out there. Have you ever gotten the error: “Run-time error ‘76’ – Path not found” and wondered why?

Today I’m going to tell you why it happens and how to fix it.

What is it?

The error looks like this:

Run-time error 76

This error ONLY affects version 4.0.4. Versions 4.0.5+ are NOT affected by this error.

What Causes This Error?

This error indicates that two different users, using a multi-user version, are trying to use SnapCharT at the same time. Note this doesn’t mean they’re editing the same incident, they’re simply using the same program one after another.

When you edit a SnapCharT inside the TapRooT System Software, a database key is updated with the location of your Temporary Files Directory. This can (and is) different between computer operating system versions and/or if the user or administrator manually changed this setting.

When User_A logs into the system, their temporary directory is C:\TEMP

But when User_B logs into the system, their temporary files directory is C:\Windows\Temp

When User_A edits a SnapCharT then User_B does the same in a different incident while User_A is still logged on, User_B gets the Run-time error ‘76’.

Why Does This Not Happen All The Time?

Because if User_A and User_B had the same Temporary Files directory, then they would never see an error. Or if User_B logged on after User_A logged out, the database is updated with a new Temporary Files path.

How Can I Fix This?

Contact Us! Use the Contact Us form here on the website and send your message to Tech Support. We’ll be happy to send along the fix to licensed clients. The patch will replace your tapvb.exe in your C:\Program Files\TapRooT directory.

Thanks again for reading. See you next week!
