We don’t have time to do it right, but time to do it twice!
Have you heard the . . . “time to do it twice” line before (or live it every day)?
About “time to do it twice,” we just had some windows replaced in our building. They measured one size window wrong throughout the office. You know what’s coming, right? They came to install the windows, which of course didn’t fit.
Next, they remeasured, ordered the right size window, waited for those to arrive, and scheduled new time for installation.
- Maybe they needed to do a TapRooT® Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to find out how/why the measurement was wrong?
- Was the person measuring new on the job?
- Were the windows an odd style that required specific knowledge in how to measure?
If your company is mistake-prone, do you factor in the “time to do it twice”?
Little mistakes like these add up to inefficiency. It reminds you of the saying, “measure twice and cut once.” Well, in this case, it should have been measure twice, order and install once!
Beyond that, they had extra windows on their hands. Did they return them? Store them in their warehouse?
They also had to reschedule the new installation date to perform a small job, keeping them from another job that was already on their books. We should also mention the ding on their reputation created by error, plus lowered expectation on the part of our company.
Finally, the window company had to wait through this whole cycle to be paid for the job. I point this out because, sure it may seem a small occurrence, but when these “small errors” happen over and over, efficiency is not at its peak. Let TapRooT® RCA help you avoid small and large mistakes and remove those frustrations.
