What does a bad day look like? Run aground

run aground

It’s a real head scratcher when a large vessel is run aground, especially when it’s a brand-new large freighter that gets stuck in the mud at Windsor’s Reaume Park, Belle Isle, MI.

The vessel, run aground on the Canadian side of the Detroit River, is known for being the new Great Lakes freighter, the first US-built ship to navigate the Great Lakes in 40 years.

Bound for Milwaukee, the Mark W. Barker was mired in the silt on the eastern tip of Belle Isle in Windsor, ONT. Apparently, the freighter, carrying 20,000 tons of salt, had an electronics malfunction. The US Coast Guard studied a way to float the freighter from its stuck position. Of course, there was also the complication of four more boats that were heading toward that location.

And, now, an update on the run aground Mark W. Barker:

As of 12:00 pm yesterday (May 17, 2023), the ship was successfully refloated. The Coast Guard said that they were working with the owner of the freighter, Interlake Steamship Company, to put together the refloat execution.
