Fire Breaks Out Amid KPCL Technical Testing, Claims 3 Lives

An accidental fire broke out at KPCL power plant in Bangalore as engineers were conducting tests in a gas turbine chamber.

In early morning hours of October 2, 2019, technical experts were gathered at the KPCL (Kamataka Power Corporate Limited) combined cycle power plant in Yelahanka, Bangalore, to conduct tests ahead of the plant’s long-awaited commissioning. An accidental fire broke out at 3:00 am, resulting in the injury of 15 employees from KPCL, BHEL (Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited), and GE (General Electric).

Subsequently, three engineers from the 15 injured died as a result of their burn injuries from the KPCL fire

According to TNM, “those who were injured in the fire were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

“After a preliminary investigation, KPCL had claimed that the incident took place due to a suspected oil leakage from a bearing and the flames came from a gas turbine chamber.

“Root cause is being analyzed to find out the exact reason for the fire incident at the Combined Cycle Gas Power Plant at Yelahanka which is under construction and commissioning phase. The construction is being done by the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).”
