Is “Safety Third”?

Safety Third

For those familiar with the show, “Dirty Jobs”, the host, Mike Rowe, finds himself in some challenging positions. Where does safety fit into this when you have an untrained person doing a particular job?

Watch the video for Mike’s explanation of his “Safety Third” concept. “The business of doing the work comes first . . .” Do you agree?

In the next video, he lists humorous “safety first” situations, and then it becomes much more serious when injuries began occurring. He blames it on complacency. Is your company promoting complacency? Does “in compliance” mean “out of danger”?

How does this affect safety culture? How do you transform this thinking, especially putting a non-trained person in roles of danger?

TapRooT® looks at what is wrong in the PROCESS that allows for an incident to happen AND how to fix it so it doesn’t happen again. Wouldn’t it be great if Mike was put in a position where safeguards were in place to limit the risks and consequences?

Maybe Mike needs to only do jobs where companies use the TapRooT® process for incident investigation so he knows he will be well protected in whatever position he is put in.
