How far away is death: “This wall of water was coming right at me”
The Boston.com weather forecast headlines for Tuesday, July 23, 2019, read, “Here’s what to expect from Tuesday’s weather forecast: The day could add an additional one to two inches of rain to Monday’s totals.” The only mention of Cape Cod was, “While areas such as Cape Cod could see evening showers, Tuesday evening should remain predominantly dry.”
However, come Tuesday afternoon, a line of severe storms produced a tornado on Cape Cod. With maximum winds whipping at 110 mph, the tornado clocked in at an EF1. Corey A Smith, 27, was working on his sailboat in Chatham when the powerful storm descended on the harbor. As boats capsized around him, Smith clung to life in his sailboat and videoed the drama that was going down around him. Of the scene around him, Smith said, “There were times I thought that either the boat’s going over, or I’m going in.”
Smith, a marine services technician, attributed his survival as, “Thank God, I was on a well-built boat.”
